Dan Scott explains why it’s easier than you think to Make Your Own Music…

“A lot of people can get caught up in thinking that it’s very hard to make your own music, when in fact it’s really not that hard at all!”

Here’s 5 reasons why it’s much easier than you think to make your own music:

1. You don’t have to be able to sing! – And there’s more than one reason why this is the case:

A. Make it instrumental!

Nowadays instrumental music is very popular, from Dubstep to House, Alternative to Rock music, there lots of great new bands that are doing well playing purely instrumental music, which can be very captivating in both a live and a recorded setting.

B. Session musicians exist!

You can hire professional vocalists to sing on your songs, or you can get a friend who’s a good singer to help you out too. You do not have to be the vocalist to make your own music.

C. Samples Suffice!

A lot of people who make their own music these days use samples i.e. pre-recorded vocals. These can be from the samples that come free with your recording software, or just clips from your favourite songs put together. Often these can prove to be even more effective than an original vocal in the context of the song!

2. It can cost you nothing – nothing at all!

There are lots of recording programs now that you can download from the Internet for free. Just click and you’re off! A prime example being Audacity: http:// audacity.sourceforge.net/ But there are many more out there that do a very good job!

3. You don’t need to be a musical genius – not even the best songwriters are!

A lot of famous songwriters and producers are not musical geniuses. Diane Warren (one of the most successful female songwriters of all time) once said, “Do I know anything about music theory? Not much. I work mostly on feel. I can’t read music, but I know a little about chords and things. I had one music class in high school, with an excellent teacher, but didn’t pay any attention…In my case, I just picked up things along the way. Without craft it can’t be art and without art the craft doesn’t mean anything.”

It’s always pleasing to hear that even the best of the best aren’t necessarily experts on theory and don’t pay too much attention to it!

4. “Do I need to be able to play an instrument?” – Nope!

It may come as a surprise to you that you don’t even need to be able to play an instrument to make your own music. The laptop is your friend! You can create your own music that is completely unique through using recording software and samples. Or you can just record your own sounds, your body is an instrument! Clap, click, stomp, squeal! You can record all of these sounds and edit them to make them sound as weird and wonderful as you want to make your own music that is completely personal to you!

5. “…But I’m no good with computers either, I don’t understand all of this new fangled recording software!” – So what? Help is here!

Remember that you don’t have to make your own music alone. You can write the songs, come up with all of the ideas, or even just hum the tune. You can have as much control as you want. Find yourself someone who IS good with computers and recording software. A lot of people have home studios now and could help you to record your own EP. If not a friend, then you can look these people up. Google search for recording studios or producers in your area and you’ll find someone quickly enough I’m certain of it.
